I was curious what sort of performance we might expect from the 170 hp 2001 A4 1.8T in stock form, so I did some admittedly unscientific comparative calculations of power to weight ratios, torque to weight ratios, and 0-60 performance according to the official statistics listed by Audi for the 1999 and 2000 model year A4 1.8T, A4 1.8T Avant, A4 2.8, A4 2.8 Avant, and S4. Assessing Audi's data, I found very strong statistical correlation between 0-60 performance and both power to weight ratio and torque to weight ratio.

Using the official Audi specifications, I then interpolated between the values to estimate what kind of performance might be expected from the 2001 A4 1.8T with 170 hp. According to my estimates, 0-60 performance for the 2001 A4 1.8T with 170 hp should be on the order of:

7.5 to 7.7 seconds for the Sedan
7.7 to 7.9 seconds for the Avant.

Then using the published power and torque numbers for the Stage 1 (1.0 Bar) chips from MTM and APR, I also estimated 0-60 performance for a Stage 1 chipped A4 1.8T:

6.5 to 6.7 seconds for the Sedan
6.7 to 6.9 seconds for the Avant

I wasn't sure what kind of numbers I would get, but the results actually seem really reasonable. I would actually not be too surprised if my estimates are reasonably accurate if a little conservative, as I suspect Audi's own numbers are. At any rate, my performance estimates do compare favorably with Audi's official 1999 and 2000 performance numbers for the current stock A4 1.8T 150hp and A4 2.8 190 hp, which are listed below for reference:

8.1 to 8.4 seconds for the A4 1.8T Sedan
8.3 to 8.6 seconds for the A4 1.8T Avant
7.1 to 7.3 seconds for the A4 2.8 Sedan
7.3 to 7.5 seconds for the A4 2.8 Avant

Are the stock 00's 0.2 to 0.3 seconds slower than the 99's?? Why?

already made the 170 hp change. But then again there are so many "experts" here on
Audiworld ready to tell me I'm dreaming that I never can be sure anymore.

???? Having driven a 99 and a 00, the 2000 is faster - everybody seems to agree on that.

Thanks, just wondering. If with a gtech is seems those things are about .5 seconds off.
I have a 2000 1.8QCS 5 speed on order and would love for it to do 0-60 in 7.65 seconds.
Also, if it has 170hp then the apr chip I ordered will only give me 30 additional hp vs the 50 additional hp people driving 99's got.

4 more weeks and counting, then 1500 miles break in, then apr chip - I can not wait.

I've compared mine to 2 stock 1.8TQM's, a 98 and a 99, and my 2000 is *significantly* faster than either. Both of my friends agree after driving mine.

I've done a lot of 0-60 runs with my GTech pro and can easily get a 7.1sec time (no clutch abuse, just a blip of the throttle to pre-spool the turbo). Granted, the Gtech ain't perfect. But, my times are nearly identical to the gtech runs in my wifes stock Integra GSR, which is rated at ~7.0-7.3 in the magazines. The other 2 older 1.8s ran in the 7.8-8.0 sec range. I've also run it against a Contour SVT and a 528i 5sp and the A4 is a tick faster than each.

My guess is that Audi saw the mix of 1.8s to 2.8s and wanted to shift it toward the 2.8, so they widened the published performance gap. Probably just marketing and positioning trying to convince a few more spec-hungry buyers that a 2.8 is the car they want and to not even drive the 1.8T. Its actually pretty smart seeing as they probably have higher margins on the 2.8 and have seen increasingly more 1.8Ts sold each year, possibly at the expense of 2.8s.

Still, it doesn't explain what happened in the MY2K's to make them faster, but I aint complaining.

I think it was calibrated pretty well, I really made sure it was level, and everything zero'd
out before the run. I put NO abuse on the clutch, didn't really pre-spool the turbo that
much and shifted about 500 below redline. As a comparason, my freind with a 99 with a
K04 and Remus exhaust could only get a 7.8, and he was trying to reduce wheel spin. So I
think if the G-tech was giving too low #'s it would show up there.

I swapped cars with another freinds stock 99.5, and we both agreed my car felt faster and
gave more boost once spooled up. I am absolutely convinced that the 2000's already have
170 HP. I've personaly experienced the differences. To those who are still skeptics: cool
I would be too. Do some research, drive both models, and decide for yourself.

my 2000 1.8TQMS is suppose to be here at the end of april and I going with what you say. I have already ordered my apr chip so I can not wait. So you are guessing 0-60 below 7 with the chip.
