Default 2001 A4 1.8t temperature increase after shut off?

I recently acquired a 2001 A4 with the 1.8t engine. After I shut the car off and run in the store for a few minutes the engine temperature gauge rises a full notch above it's normal position (center). I have also noticed that the auxiliary fan does not turn on to lower the temperature unless the car is running with the AC on. Once I start the car it returns to the normal operating temperature and both fans appear to function properly. This is my first car with a turbo and I am wondering if this is normal for this model or a problem that could cause damage. Any one have a 1.8t that does this?

It's called heat soak. Completely normal in high heat areas. That electric fan will not turn on unless A/C is running.

Just make sure you let the car idle for about 30 seconds before you turn it off after it's been run hard or heated up well.

Makes sense, I just moved back to the south. This car has not seen above 96 degree temperatures regularly until now. I get a little nervous about overheating issues, as I have heard many tales of heads warping. Is heat soak common for turbo cars in general or is this specific to the B5?

You can always wire up the 2nd fan using a relay and switch so you can turn it on while the car is off. You could even use a controller that will work off the temps. Works even better when you convert the car to a EFK and control both fans.

It's a common issue with any water cooled car.
