This past July, I picked up my 2001 A4 1.8T (auto) with everything but Bose and Xenon. I absolutely love the car but the turbo lag is VERY annoying. I knew about some turbo lag when I ordered in April but now I want a little more power behind the whirring turbo. ...and the divertor valve noise is something that has taken away some of the joy in a new car purchase.
I thought about chipping the car and not sure whether it would make much difference with an automatic.
I would appreciate anyone's opinion especially those who have thought about moving up to the S4.
Thanks!

I have not noticed the DV noise in this cool fall temperature (I'm in Boston). Has anyone experienced the same thing? I'm expecting to hear that DV noise next year as the weather warms up.

The turbo lag on my stock 99 A4 is hardly noticable. With my APR chip the lag is more pronounced but the power increase brings a smile to my face. The chip is smooth considering the power/boost increase but the lag remains.
An S4 will provide lots of power, but if you are very concerned about lag it may not be the way to go. Best bet is to test drive one.
Of course you may want to consider the 2.8 engined A4. No turbos -- no lag :-)
Otherwise you will need to consider other normally aspirated engines.. maybe non-Audis!

On engines which utilize a turbo, a manual transmission will reduce turbo lag quite more than an automatic. The only 1.8t i've driven with an automatic had quite a bit a lag compared to the manual. If you're open to the idea of trading the car, perhaps you should keep this in mind. The S4 will lag a bit also, but because of the twin-turbo setup, lag is reduced greatly.
