2001 A4 2nd gear grind
Anybody have this problem my car has this 2nd gear grind especialy when is cold is really bad, I called the dealer and I have an appointment to have this checked and also have the 5K service done my car only has 4100 miles and I got it back in february I don't drive it hard at all but I have this problem, the dealer told me that they have a new syncro gear for the TT for the same problem but not for the A4 and that they will check it anyway, anybody else with this problem.

If I shift from 1st to 2nd quickly it will sort of clunk into 2nd...
Not as smooth as the 2-3, 3-4, or 4-5 shifts. It's nothing unusual though, every manual I've owned has done this to some degree, and yes it gets worse when it's cold.
My guess is that it has something to do with abrupt change from 1st to 2nd in gear ratios. First is really short compared to the other gears on virutally every car out there. I'm thinking it's a fact of life and something that's normal.
I've found (on all my mannys) that shifting from 1st into 2nd by going through the neutral point relieves the strain on the box and makes the shift much smoother. In otherwords zig zag into 2nd rather than going straight there. I do this when it's cold outside and the car has been sitting for a long time. Once the gearbox gets warmed up the 1-2 shifts are buttery smooth again.
As I said I think it has more to do with the gearing of 1st relative to 2nd more than a problem with 2nd itself. For instance a 3-2 downshift is smooth. Mind you, I don't have any grinding at all, more of a "clunk" that only happens on 1-2 shifts. If you've got grinding then it might be something entirely different, perhaps a bad synchro.
I'd be interested to hear what your mechanic says either way. Keep us posted.
