Default 2001 A4 Avant - capable of carying a 17 ft. canoe?

Anyone out there ever carry a 17ft aluminum Grumman canoe on the A4 Avant? I would like to but not sure it it is too large. Also, any good recommendations on racks for the canoe?

Default that is a massive vessel... I'm sure it can be done, but *should* it be done...

is the more appropriate response.

how far would you have to haul it? down the road to the lake is a bit different than 600 miles.

what's it weigh?

We just want to go around the county to forest preserve lakes. 600 miles is out of the question. We cannot fit our camping gear in this car. We take my husband's vette and pull a motorcycle cargo trailer with camping gear. NOTE: The corvette does not haul the canoe either. Maybe I should just trade for a Toureg.

Actually, I forgot, first we have to pick it up at my parent's house in NC and drive it back to Chicago. That is a 16 hour trip!!!

Default the touareg's a great vehicle, no doubt.

went off-roading with one last week and it was surprisingly capable, so it'll get you to almost any destination possible, and will likely do it with a 17' canoe atop it.

i'm sure with the right fastening, you'll be able to take the canoe around the county on the A4

Default in that case, rent a truck, trailer or something.

i'm sure you can find a trailer for the canoe

BTW, forum convention is that you change the subject line in your replies. you can also use the "edit" button above to add content to a previous post you have made.

Default The weight should be around 100 pounds, what's your roof rack rated at?

Or you could just get a carbon fiber canoe, they are less than 50 pounds. but BIG $$$$

Default I've carried my 18' sprint canoe using Yak racks on my sedan w/ no problems

not sure if the factory avant racks are up for the challenge though. I've heard of Mtn bike causing enough drag to pull factory racks off the roof of SUVs.

Default I would have to disagree on that.. A good friend was a VW tech specializing in Touareg's..

Said they were nothing but one lump of problems. He said he would not touch them with a 10 foot pole, including the R32.

Cheers,
Joel

Default

Why not? that is why the rack is there. Bikes, rack boxes, canoes, kayaks etc...
