I wasn't aware that anyone had made a direct fit replacement (replaced mine 2 years ago). If you want to be sure, measure the length of the OEM, and compare to the replacement Duralast. Should be within 0.5" of each other.
The terminal location and everything else is the same. The only real magic behind direct fit is that it is the same length so that your OEM bracket will hold the battery down. The older/shorter batteries will work fine in your car as well (albeit slightly weaker specs but nothing you'll ever notice in real world use).
Don't make this too complicated...it's not.

or engine) then you don't have to worry about loosing all the data your car needs to remember (radio, lock, ECU, all the convenient codes you might have programmed in for security, climate control, cluster, etc). In my case, I either used a garden tractor battery attached with small jumper wires or my battery charger set to 2A. Works everytime on all my Audis and other cars.

If you cut power long enough, you will need the code. Period. That said, more than a few people have changed their batteries and didn't require the code (myself included). My guess is the radio can manage a small lapse in power without going into SAFE mode, but at some point it will eventually require a code to work again.
Knowing that SS likes his beer while working on the car, it's conceivable that his beer hobby interrupted his wrenching long enough to require the code.

Or no power meaning battery was dead? If it's the later, dead could mean not enough to operate lights, start car, etc., but it could have had enough juice to keep the radio from going into SAFE mode. Dunno.
