...is the torque which results in the 350 figure the absolute mechanical force it can withstand over any period of time, or the amount when applied instantaneously? I would imagine it's the former, since the latter figure is pretty meaningless (as you could probably apply a lower impulse force with a sufficiently short onset that would still manage to destroy the internals). I would imagine there is a total maximal force you can apply under normal conditions under which the engine fails mechanically and this is probably what produces the 350 HP number - i.e. that even under the most optimal conditions with the least amount of surging, the engine begins to fail at torque levels beyond that threshold which produces 350 HP.

fine. go with that. that's your opinion.
You do realize that BLKPERL sent his car directly to APR to have a GT28RS turbo tuned on his '01.5 CH box 1.8T A4? They haven't announced anything yet. All other stage 3+ kits that have been released are based upon the published number on their web site.
And, who came up with the 350 hp at the crank/flywheel limit?

They said the mechanical limit of the 1.8T is about 350 HP. You can probably do a search to verify this, I'm certain of the figure that I saw however. As to whether it's true - well it's the only number I have seen on the subject, so that's what I go by. It's realistic in my view.

that the engine can reliably handle about 350 HP:
https://forums.audiworld.com/a4/msgs/2398332.phtml
From that stems the obvious conclusion that 295 WHP is therefore not achievable reliably in a car whith AWD that loses 20-25% at the wheels.

Look at their description for the stage III+ for 2002-2005 cars:
"It is also recommended that the stock engine internals be upgraded for power levels above 93 octane, as APR is not responsible for this type of damage to the engine."
93 makes 340 HP according to their website.

with that said...it's torque, not horsepower that breaks stuff. Besides, what's the absolute limit mean if it's your daily driver. If you think about it....how often are you at WOT when you're driving around? Heck, I think unless I KNOW I'll be needing "ludacris speed"...I may be just driving around in the "stock-like" boost program here in the scorching heat of Florida summer anyways. Further protection against too much timing and knock.
