Hello,

I have a 2001 Audi A4 Quattro 1.8L Turbo with white smoke coming out of the exhaust. Smoke definitely is burning coolant. Oil does have a little bit of coolant (milky).
Here's how I have tried to remedy the white exhaust with overheating and low coolant level if driven longer than about 10 miles:
1. Replaced the turbo. The engine is 'burning' coolant but I also have dry coolant stains all over the engine.
2. Replaced head gasket. New bolts, new gaskets, done with a Bentley manual and a lot of attention to torque specs, gasket direction, etc.
3. Took the head to a machine shop. They told me and showed me where they suspected a leak.
4. Unknowingly took the head almost completely dismantled (with valves still in) to a welder who told me to take it back to a machine shop for further disassembly.
5. Took the head to a DIFFERENT machine shop because the welder who happens to work close to my house recommended them.
6. SECOND machine shop told me that there was NO crack in the head. Also told me they pressure tested to 50psi (another shop told me 100psi is more accurate?). They put it back together, got the timing almost right, and replaced all valve seals, cam shaft seal, and timing rotor seal.
7. Now I've spent all my money. I use this car for work everyday. Did at least,and my girlfriend is tired of sharing cars. Anything else I should check before buying a new used head or having mine welded?

And here's another thought - if my head is cracked near the threads of #2 spark plug why do I have dried coolant stains all over my motor?
