I'm glad I waited for the new A4 design. What do I like:
The overall simplicity and elegance of the new design. Like the designers said: the car has only a few lines with smooth panels. I like it. No frills, no crappy trim. Classy. Simple. Understated.
The smooth mini-A6 look is cool. I dig it. Sophisticated, yet smaller and sporty. The rear TT style exhaust is beautiful and hints at the performance capabilities of the car.
The front headlights and grill combo look great. The rectangular headlights with xenon and projector beams look mean. Almost a TT-esque design that has been expanded to sedan size.
The interior is simple and functional. There is nothing 'special' about the interior. This is *exactly* what I want. If I wanted a 'styled' look with plastic and frilly bits everywhere, I'd buy a Lexus. I like the utilitarian, yet somewhat upscale German design. The integrated nav system (with the 'just right' screen size) is a perfect blend of functional high-tech in a car. It looks like it belongs there - not an afterthought.
And now you can get 17" wheel (with performance tires) from the factory. Fantastic. I'll take it. Car looks mean in sport trim
I dunno, for about $30k +/- I think this 2002 A4 1.8T Quattro is for me. No other AWD car competes. Glad I waited. I'll have one on order asap.

Nav isn't available in the 2001 1.8, so don't assume it'll be available in the '02. Of course, this might change.
As for the interior: You say it's "simple and functional. There is nothing 'special' about the interior." I certainly agree with you there. Where we differ is in whether this is a good thing. Audi has an established reputation for some of the best interiors in the business, and it's got nothing to do with what you call "frilly bits". Sit in any current model A4 or A6 and you'll see what I mean. This new interior isn't just simple, it's downright boring and mundane, not at all consistent with Audi's well-earned reputation. A step backward for sure.
