225/45 is the 'correct' 17" tire size.

what do those numbers mean... something about width and rim size right? obviously 17 is rim size

225=tread width. 45=aspect ratio (sidewall height, expressed as a % of width). 17=rim diameter

YES. ABSOLUTELY. It's a much better size for snow tires.

Default Sorry, you didn't specify they were for snow. Yes, 205/50 will fit and will
represent approx. 1% speedo error from stock 16" tires or approx. 0.5% error from stock 17" tires. Either way, negligable.
