Yes VW is in prototype stage with a new VR8, which is essentially a VR6 with two more cylinders. It may be offered in 3.7 or 4.2l versions or both. It is a VR design so as to used in tranverse engine installations. No way it is put in the Audi A4. It may have been referring to the A4 platform which is the NB, TT, Golf etc. VW is also working on a complete VR engine line including a VR4, VR5, VR6 and VR8, as well as a "W" engine line with a W8, W12, W16 and W18. The W8 will first be put in the new Grand Passat. These are essentially two VR engines mated at the crank. The W16 was in the Bently Hundinares and the W18 was in the Bugatti EB218. In a couple of years, I doubt that VW and Audi will share any engines. I think this is a good thing.

Audi is currently in the testing phases with the 4.2 liter engine in a twin turbo configuration. Expect the name rs4. I doubt it will be sold in the us, though. Expect this vehicle to have 408bhp and to sell in europe for pricing compedative with the m5.
