Default 5K service done yesterday...oil question

I just had the service done and I asked about synthetic oil. The salesman and the tech both said that there isn't a need for synthetic. I know this has probobly been asked, but what kind of oil are you running and if synth., why not regular.

Default search the archives and tech articles about the benefits of synthetic over mineral...

AoA's position is that both types of oil are acceptable. Since mineral is much cheaper, that's what the dealers put in the cars during service. If you want synthetic, you have to pay extra or bring your own.

Also, check what grade of oil your dealer put in. Mine was going to put in 15w40. I didn't like that, so I brought my own 0w30 (Mobil 1).

Default You dont 'need' synthetic, just like you didnt 'need' an Audi...

...but if you plan on keeping your car, synthetic is best for it.

Do a little reading on the Mobil1 site...its accurate info.

PS - Since your sales guy/tech arent recommending synthetic, I'd love to hear them explain why Audi shipped your car from the factory with synthetic in the engine and gear box (if you have a standard, that is.)

Mobil1 - Why Synthetics?

Default The salesmen doesn't know better... the tech should know better...

Bottom line is that the 2001 A4's come from the factory filled with 0W-30 oil, per the manual. The manual recommends 0W-30 oil be used. To my knowledge the only oils with 0W-30 formulation are synthetic.

Synthetic oil is lightyears beyond conventional oils, the biggest difference is the better distribution of polymer chain lengths. The synthetic oil is more uniform and does not contain nasty short chain polymers like waxes that can contribute to coking up your oil lines.

The dealers *should* use what is recommended in the manual, but we know that's not happening. So I bring in 4 quarts of Mobil-1 0W-30 oil for each oil change.

Incidentally I noticed about a 15 degree drop in oil temperature when I switched over to Mobil-1 at the 5K interval. I don't know what the factory 0W-30 brand is, but I would say that Mobil-1 runs slightly cooler.

At the next oil change I'd bring in your own 0W-30 so you know you're getting the good stuff. The dealership will use whatever is cheapest, you can depend on that.

The tech actually said it came with regular oil, not synthetic. Lying bastards!!!! and yes it is a 5spd.

Default I run synthetic, and my car runs smoother and revs build quicker.

But my wallet empties quicker though, since that stuff aint cheap! But it's worth it IMO, and you will feel a difference.
