Default 6 speed vs 5 speed

Simple question ( probably why I don't know.. )
All other things being the same, why is a 6 speed trans preferable to a five speed ? What advantage is the extra shift point ? Do engine characteristics ( type, turbo or not, etc. ) make a difference ?
TIA
Donnie

Additional high gear allows lower engine rpm at cruising speed; good for fuel economy.

Default Not usually...

Often the 6th gear in a 6 speed is the same ratio as the 5th gear in a 5 speed.
But the 6 speed has closer gear ratios than a 5 speed (i.e. better acceleration). This is why we aren't still using those old 2 speed auto gearboxes from 50's.
DwayneC
94 S4
