89 Octane enough to prevent car from starting?

I'm having some strange problems with my recently purchased '97 A4 and would like to see if anyone has advice before I take it to the dealer.
The car is having problems starting, but only on two occasions when I've tried 89 Octane fuel. The behaviour is:
1. It will stall out about 1 minute after being started, but then will not restart. If I let it sit for minutes it will start up, but roughly. The "check engine" light and the gas light come on.
2. If I shut the car down after only driving for a few minutes, the car will not restart. Again, if I let it sit for 30 minutes, it will usually start, but roughly.
Again, this has happened only in the two times when I've tried 89 Octane. Obviously, I'll put 92 in from now on, but I can't imagine that the car should have these extreme reaction due to lower octane gas.
Any advice? Thanks, Scott
