From 96-99 A4's, is the automatic tranny a 4 speed or a 5 speed auto?

A4's from 1996 to 1998 featured a ZF Industries automatic transmission, five speed, four selectable gearing choices for forward gears. From 1998 until 1999.5, A4's featured either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed automanual Tiptronic transmission with five selectable gears, four maximum select gear choices for forward gears, and a parallel selection gate.
Cameron
In "normal" automatic driving you can select gears 1 through 4, you should, of course, not treat this like a stick shift, this is primarly for situations where you are climbing steep hills, or other weird circumstances. You can just leave the car in "drive" and the tranny will automaticly shift through all 5 foward gears for you.
In "tiptronic" mode you actually push the gear selector into a slot on the right, and you can "shift" through all 5 foward gears. In tip mode there is no neutral or reverse. You must go back into "Auto" mode for either of these. In the newer A4s, (98.5?-99) there are also tiptronic controls on the steering wheel. Although, I have found that these are not very useful on twisty roads.
Email me if you havce any more questions
-Stu Koch
99 2.8 qts
