I just picked up a 1996 A4 quattro v6. It won't stay running unless I keep the idle at about 4000 rpm. I've been doing a little reading and it seems like possibly an egr/ throttle body, or idle control valve issue. I just replace the mass airflow sensor. Anyone have this issue? Thank you-

If you have to keep it revved to 4K just to run, I doubt it's the EGR or idle control valve. An air leak will do that, also a bad coolant temp sensor. VAG-COM is your friend in times like this. Check all of the hoses and check valves for breaks to start with.

Thank you I was looking at it this morning and noticed that one of the wires to the sensor on the bottom of the holding tanks was ripped out of the sensor. I assume that this is probably the temperature sensor. I'm going to fix it and then scan the computer. Thank you for your input.

That's likely the coolant level sensor, not the temp sensor. On your car the temp sensor is a the back of the engine, on the passenger side. The way to access it is to remove both band clamps from the black corrugated air duct, remove it, and then more or less right below will be the coolant temp sensor with a four-wire connector on top. The sensors are well-known for going bad, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to just change it.
