97 a4 1.8t engine rattle -HELP!
Hi,
I have a 1997 audi a4 1.8t and just started getting a bad engine rattle sound. It sounds like
an old vw or a volvo diesel now.. From what I have read , '97 audi's seem to suffer from a wastegate failure and/or loose heatshield. Is this probably the cause? There are no check engine lights, the fluids are fine. However, I have noticed unburned gas exhaust when I start the engine up in the morning, which sounds like it could be related to a wastegate failure.

my experience inside
when my wastegate broke, there was no rattle or anything, just a total loss of power - no boost from the turbo.
however, just recently, when my timing belt tensioner broke, there was a severe rattle, up until about 3k rpms.
ymmv, but hope this helps?

Re: my experience inside
I am getting the sound at idle and it diminishes
as the RPM increases. I have not noticed a dramatic loss in power since this rattle started, but then again, I was not flooring it as I gingerly drove it home.. maybe the timing belt tensioner is the culprit.

Re: sounds exactly like my t-belt tensioner.. get this checked out soon, could cause big probs
i am now freaked, because this sounds like my
engine could be quite messed up. Should I even
venture driving it to the repair shop?
thanks!
