I have developed a whining noise under load that seems to be emanating from the shifter/transmission/gearbox. It only happens under acceleration/load and is sort of like the noise you hear when you put sideways pressure on the shifter when it is in gear. Seems to track wheel speed but cannot be sure. The gears shift smoothly and the clutch is working fine.
Any thoughts?
Motor mounts, synchros, something else in the driveline?
I am tempted to change the manual tranny oil to Redline MT-90 or MTL to see if that helps. Anyone have experience with either of those two in an Audi. I used to run it in my Eclipse and it worked well.
Thanks,
Lorin

Hi, I have 00 Avant A6 and just recently I started hearing pulsating noise when accelerating or speeding up harder from lower speed.
The noise is pulsating whining and it also
First I thought it is happening during sharp turns, then I also noticed this when accelerating on straight aways. It seems to be doing it more when cold and almost goes away when car warms up. It seems to me it's coming from right side.
I suspected brakes (but that's not the case), torque converter and also was reading about possible tie rod problem and now I see you comment about steering pump (fluid).
My latest search revealed it's most likely the driveshaft problem - see this topic....

I am still trying to diagnose it.
Thanks for any info.
