Default 97 A4 2.8 Exhaust Tone

Has anyone ever removed the center muffler and left the stock rear muffler in place? I would like a little more exhaust tone out the rear but I do not want an exhaust drone sound inside the cabin. I've heard removing the rear muffler does nothing. I also have been told to be careful not to reduce backpressure too much or you will sacrifice horsepower & torque on the 2.8 (no turbo). Any experience out there with this on a 2.8? Thanks.

Default I have a 96 2.8 also and I just went to a magnaflow setup.

but I have 2 mufflers, a mid muffler 4" round and a 4x9x14 oval rear muffler.

They are straight through type mufflers with a perforated center pipe that is surrounded by steel wool and fiberglass. The entire muffler is made from stainless steel 16ga to be exact.

The pair of mufflers costs $150 from bigexhaust.com You just have to pick a tip that looks good.

Default No proven performance gain on removing resonator

Default I have done just that. No real performance difference, but the sound is definately louder.

It was cool in the begining but lately its just not all that great. Its not the loudness but the tone that I don't like, especially when the car is cold or in colder weather. I am replacing the rear muffler with a neuspeed/borla soon and I will do it without the mid muffler. Will see if it gets better.

I love the Remus, where did you get it and did you say you removed the muffler located in the center of the underbody? You have a nice set up - looks great! Do you think you lost torque by creating less backpressure? I've heard that is an issue on the 2.8 non turbo. Thanks.
