Engine is starting to vibrate slightly today, lost of power..etc..
I've been through something like this before, it was a misfiring in cylinder #2 - so I think I remembered they replaced the entire coil pack, and the problem went away.
Would this time be the same problem as last time? Could I just go buy the coil pack from the dealer (I know there's a wait for them) and replace the faulty one?
I thought the coilpack problems were more of a DBW engine problem?
Lastly, with the 1.8T engines, aren't these called Ignition coils and not coil packs?
THX for any help you can provide me.

should be changed every 30k... when you are stock... I'de check it every 10k when chipped... to look for carbon deposits on the plug itself, and either clean or replace if it is filled with carbon.

...the ignition amplifier (the small electrical part that sits on top of the airbox) is the most popular misfiring culprit on the '97 and '98s. $280 part. Coilpack failures, for the most part, are limited to the newer models. I've got 100K on all 4 coilpacks, however I have had to replace the amplifier : \ Good luck

Go to your local Autozone and pick up some regular Densos (not iridium)....they shouldn't be more than $2 each. Like this:

I remember seeing a post where someone described how to check the amplifier with a multimeter, but I can't seem to find it. So, that would leave you with the other method: process of elimination. You really need a VAG-COM even for this method, so that you can swap plugs and coilpacks, while monitoring exactly which cylinders are misfiring. As you move the coilpacks and plugs, if the misfire stays on #2, then it's a pretty safe bet that your amplifier is the culprit. Good luck
