Default 97 Audi A4 starts without clutch depressed

Need some help. I bought a 1997 Audi A4 2.8 5 spd for my 16 year old and it will start in gear without the clutch depressed. The switch appears good and it doesn't matter whether the switch wiring is unplugged. I assume there is only the one switch, the one that the vacumn line attaches to. What am I missing? The cruise won't work either. Thanks

I keep meaning to do that to mine. Bad for the thrust bearing to load it up with no oil circulating.

Heres how its adjusted
  • Loosen two bolts slightly (arrows).
  • Have second technician fully depress clutch pedal up to stop.
  • Place feeler gauge -A- with specific dimension -a-3.2 mm +/- 0.2 mm (0.126 inch +/- 0.008 inch) between operating surface of clutch pedal and switch cam.
  • Move switch -B- toward gauge -A- until stop, and tighten two mounting bolts (arrows) to 8 Nm (71 inch lbs.) .

The 96 never had the interlock, don't know if the 97 did.

Prospeeder, are you pretty sure my 1997 has the switch you're referring to? I don't see anything other than the plunger switch on the clutch pedal arm. The owners manual says to put the shifter in neutral and depress the clutch but it does't say the car will not start unless the clutch is depressed.
