Default '98 1.8T AEB Engine Rebuild

In the process of boring in oversize JE pistons (81.5 bore with 8.5:1 compression ratio), replacing all Ferrea valves oversize by 1mm, port and polishing the cylinder head, replacing my KO4, installing an FMIC and exhaust, I am considering a piggy back tuner system (SMT 6) from Perfect Power to access the mapping for my fuel, ignition, timing, and boost and so that my tuner can tune the engine here in the Philippines with a dyno. This would be instead of installing the stock KO3 chip, my old Neuspeed KO4 chip, or ordering another chip from a foreign manufacturer that may require several versions before the optimal setttings are achieved.

Has anyone had any experience with this company, product, or similar systems? Or any comments to any item above?

Default if you really wan to do all that engine work

why bother with a K04? It's way overkill. Get a bigger turbo and more fuel in there, or keep the engine work simple and don't touch the pistons and don't port the head. Just do cams or something like that.

Default Ditto. A K04 will have a real hard time keeping up with 2.0L of displacement.

Not to mention the tuning nightmare.

Please clarify your comment so I can coordinate properly with the local dealer. Thanks in advance.

Default The engine work is required because, among others, one piston was found to be out of shape.

In addition, there were leaks in nearly all intake valve areas. Finally, the old KO4 had a sizeable chip in one of the impeller fins.

Default the smt7 is designed for our cars which .....

for one we have a 4 window cam sensor. You cant alter the crank sensor for the timing part without also adjusting the cam sensor the same amount.....

Depending on the cost you may want to go standalone: 034efi stageIc is on $1100 and it works with all your stock sensors and coil packs. Just an option

I'm dbw so it would be a lot more simple for dbc

Default I will advise the local dealer.

Based on your earlier comment, I had spoken with him and he thought that the SMT 6 would suffice because the difference was that the SMT 7 allows timing to be advanced, which he did not think would be required in my case. However, given your experience with the systems, I would defer to your comments. I will supply him the wiring diagrams for our ecu and make sure we get it right.

I'll have to give the stand alone some thought because the overall project is to rebuild the engine around the KO4 with decent power and reliability on a cost - effective budget. Living in the Philippines limits hardware options severely.

Appreciate your help and will keep you posted.
