Default '98 2.8 ~ 90,000 miles: problem with stalling on startup...

I have an intermittant problem when starting my car. The engine cranks fine but when it catches, the RPM will surge and then stall. Sometimes the RPM will seek bady for a second and then stall. Other times the engine will crank but it will not start at all. Also, sometimes when I am at idle and I put the car in reverse it will immediately stall. I thought it was a problem with a bad tank of gas but I have since burned through that tank and the problem remains. This morning it would not start at all, then I waited 10 minutes and it started fine on the first try. Anyone else have this problem?
Thanks,
Jeff

Default Have you changed your plugs/wires etc? Also, have you done the throttle body cleaning?

Take off the intake boot from the throttle body and clean the inside of the throttle body with throttle body/carb cleaner. There is a TSB on it, if I could find teh link i'd hook you up.

Once it does run, is the MIL on?

Default I changed the plugs last spring. I haven't changed the plug wires but I plan on doing them now.

Good advice on the throttle body. I'll give it a shot. The MIL does not come on when it is running. Once it gets started it runs great. You changed your plug wires a few months ago, right? Any recommendations on brands?
Thanks,
Jeff

Default There is also a TSB on this issue. Try a high quality fuel system cleaner first.

The TSB says to check the engine coolant thermostat, throttle body, spark plugs, etc. It also mentions checking for carbon deposits if compression is low, etc., and using a fuel system cleaner.

http://www.20vturbo.com/tsb/mirror/audipdf/a150101.pdf</a

Default I have Magnecor 8.5mm Competition Wires. About $80-$90 for a set.

The cheapest I could find the OEM wires locally was $120! You may be able to find them cheaper online. Magnecor also has some cheaper wires, too (7mm and 8mm, IIRC).

By the way, just tried their site and it does not appear to be working. I know they're there because I just ordered a replacement cable from them!

http://www.magnecor.com</a

Default I got the STI ones, they are 'factory spec', unlike Magnecor.

STI says that wires like the Magnecor are no good on ignition systmes like our Audis use. Magnecore says they are fine. I have a set on our 12v, but got the STI wires for less than the Magnecore wires for the 30v (I got a REALLY good deal on them).
