To my surprise, it did work. The first time the cover had gravel gouges from a too-steep driveway, one of which broke through. That leak was not quite a continuous stream, but a pretty rapid drip. So I drained the oil, then tilted the car so the crack was on the high side. Next I flushed the damaged area with solvent (isopropyl 100%). The high-temp epoxy putty is at Home Depot, and is just like a Tootsie-roll; you slice off some and mash with your fingers until mixed. You've got to be ready because the stuff begins to set up in a minute or so. I used an old credit card to force some into the gouge and smear the rest smoothly over the repair area. This second impact Saturday scraped some of the epoxy, but the stuff held on; no leaks there.
The crack that just happened was less severe and not leaking very fast, so I didn't bother draining the oil. I used a dab of automotive silicone to plug it, then covered with epoxy as before. So far it's all dry. As to your question about how big a crack can be fixed, I couldn't say, but at least you might buy some time if you are ordering a new cover.
