Buy the right stuff from VW or Audi. Do not trust auto parts stores that say they have something that will work.

If you are absolutely stuck, I'd use "Prestone power steering fluid with stop-leak". Everyone says that anything except VW/Audi-Pentosin CHF-11 will cause the steering to seize or leak like a sieve, however my personal experience with an Audi 5000 CS Turbo that dripped Pentosin like crazy, was that the Prestone worked and actually stopped the leaks. I just added the Prestone until gradually didn't need to anymore. The steering and power brakes (that car had a duel-pump for hydraulic brake assist) was working fine even as the Salvation Army flatbed truck came to take it away.

Still, use non-specified fluids at your own risk, as your experience might end up differently than mine with the CS Turbo.

Cheap compared to the cost of pump and rack.

Is this a serious post? Crazy talk, IMHO.

Absolutely 4Driver, if this was a tongue-in-cheek post, I'd wouldn't have justified it with my CS Turbo story. So if you've seen a steering system get ruined using the Prestone PS fluid, by all means let me know so I don't advise this again. It's just that I'm a pragmatist when it comes to things like ATF and hydraulic fluids. Pentosin is a "mineral oil", an old-fashioned term for petroleum-based oils that come from the ground, as opposed to vegetable oils or animal oils. Prestone PS is a "mineral oil" too, mixes with Pentosin, and worked out for me.

But as I made clear- "use non-specified fluids at your own risk, as your experience might end up differently than mine with the CS Turbo"... and "If you are absolutely stuck..."

Most European cars use the more expensive fluids.

Last can of Pentosin I bought was under $25. Try the VW dealer instead as they use the same fluid.

My local O'reillys has it for $22.

If you can't afford that, I recommend a bus pass.
