Default '98 a4 fuel gauge problems again...

Ok, I realize that there is tons of topics about the subject but I haven't found an answer to my problems.

My fuel gauge shows wrong fuel quantity (for example, tank is full but the meter shows it to be near empty). I have already changed the transmitter (sending unit)to a new one, but the problem is still there.

Wondering if anybody else has the same problem as me?

If you have the miles to empty computer in the cluster, does it agree with the gauge or is the actual tank level.

If miles to empty and actual tank level agree it's the gauge.

Did you check the gauge, you can use VAG,com to check operation of the cluster and see if the fuel gauge is accurate.

So if you really have a full tank (forget the gauge), the miles to empty doesn't show 250 + miles?

That would be very unusual!

Nope, it shows something around 150km (100 miles??) to empty.

OK, a brief update.

The transmitter and the gauge are fine. I tested them today, took away from the tank and moved the float up and down. So the problem is when I put the transmitter back into the tank, the gauge goes just over the red line. It seems that the float doesn't go all the way but stays in somewhere in the middle...

So can it be that the tank has deformed so badly that it interferences with the float??? O_o

Or is there somesort of splash guard in the tanks may have become loose or broken?
