Default '98 trans fluid?

A friend's A4 is down for lack of trans fluid, it's a '98 A4 V6 auto. I've had many 5-cyl quattros/synchros, but am unfamiliar with these newfangled beasts. AutoZone says Audi dealer only, what fluid can he safely use? Thanks,

Default If it's a tiptronic, it takes audi synthetic trans fluid, @ $16-24 per quart.....

at your friendly audi dealer. I'd honestly be more concerned as to why it needs tranny fluid, I'd hate to dump $50-$60 worth of fluid in, just to see where it leaks out onto the ground. BTW, you'll need a special tool to put it in, may want to just pay the hour of labor for dealer to do it. Also, it needs to be done while the trans fluid is less than 45 degrees, depending on where you are.

I'm afraid it is tiptronic. He just bought it after hearing so much about quattros from people like me. Thought he was draining the oil, oops. His wife isn't too impressed, not a good start into Audi ownership where an understanding wife can make a world of difference.

So, I haven't gotten over to see the problem, but he says he can't find the tranny dipstick. Is there one? If not, how do you check it? What about pumping it in through the drain hole? I've had to do that before in similar situations. Messy but it works, unless it's a pressure tight case or there's no way to check how much is in there. He figures he drained about 5 quarts, is that even possible? My Landcruisers carry 16 qts and can only drain 4.
