A4 1.8 auto gear changing problems - thoughts?
So, I picked up a '98 A4 1.8 Automatic the other day. It's my first Audi and it drove lovely on a test drive and then on the way home. No problems at all.
So, it's been sat outside for a few days and I finally got to start it up today (crazy, I know, buy a car and not use it for 3 days - been busy!). Well, I _tried_ to start it up, but the battery was as flat as a pancake. A jump start and voltmeter later confirmed that battery was as good as useless. So, new battery then took it for a drive...
Suddenly weird gear changing problems. Seems more-or-less ok at low speeds but seemed to be shifting up too late. But then it started not shifting up at all - it seemed stuck in too-low a gear. Then suddenly without reason, it'd shift up.
Then, to cap it off, it seemed to settle in top gear, but seemed somewhat 'disconnecteed'. Difficult to explain, but if I accelerated, the revs shot up but the car went nowhere, as if it was in neutral. However, if I took my foot off the gas, it slows down. Bit later on, it behaves as it should. Bit later, freaky again.
It's off the the garage first thing on Monday, but I was just wondering if any of you had any thoughts as to what the hell is up? Thanks for reading so far

have you tried adapting the transmission? it can be doone with a vagcom
and it can supposedly be done by sticking your key in the ignition to the ACC position, stepping down on the accelerator all the way, hold it there for 5 seconds, and release. shut off the car and then start it up and drive.
at least that is what ive heard. if youre lucky enugh to get access to a vagcom (search for vagcom locater) it can be easily done.
maybe its for dbw onliy. i dont really remember, but give it a try/
