1999 Audi A4 1.8T, AEB Engine.
Just bought this Audi as a project. It is not starting. the previous owner told me it just shut off while driving. Thats all the info I have from him.
So, I scanned OBD2 codes and got: p0501 - VSS, p1338 - camshaft position sensor short to B+.
Ive read somewhere that this means it could be that the timing is off. I believe it would still start but run rough.
I pulled the timing belt cover off and the cam rotates while cranking, the belt is intact and is tight.
I replaced the VSS with no luck, I cleared the codes and now nothing comes up. I unplugged the cam sensor, cranked the car and even then no codes popped up. I know excessive cranking could cause the cam sensor coded.
What should I replace first?
-Camshaft position sensor
-Ignition control module
-Coolant temp sensor
-2 way vacuum line??????
I took off the intake hose connecting to the throttle body and i smell fuel, so I believe im not getting spark? could it be a faulty cam sensor?
Any thoughts or suggestions???

GTA_DRIVER is absolutely right! If the timing is off then you will get a VSS and Camshaft poistion sensor codes!!!!!
I just check my timing belt and the pensioner pulley is broken!!!
The belt seems very tight on top but past the camshaft teeth its extremely loose!! I felt what i believe to be the pulley and its loose and moving around.
