Default A4 1.8t quattro timing belt gone

So there I was enjoying a wonderful ride in my A4 and then everything stopped. Lights on all over the dash. Had it towed and and diagnosed as a timing belt break at 62.5k miles.:-( The non-audi shop mechanic says the valve stems are also bent and the head needs to be taken off and reworked. I thought cars now a days have remedied the problem of timing belt breaks bending valves? Is this usual?

Bending valves is a normal [potential] side effect when you snap a timing belt.

Default Nope... most engines are interference engines

That means that it's possible for the valves to contact the pistons if their movement isn't properly sequenced. Most folks here change their timing belt at 60K for that reason.

Some engines are non-interference engines but these are typically few and far between. Some Mazdas had non-interference engines, those are the only one's that I know of off the top of my head.

If you only bent valves, you'll be super lucky.... 60K or else.

Default You should at least try and see if Audi will help you out on the repair.....

They have been known to credit you half the cost of labor or parts for some owners who ask.......

Default Bents valves damaged cams rockers and valve seats . cost my paw about $1500 in parts

the labor was about twice that but he the dealer and Audi cut a deal and he didnt need to pay for the labor.

The car had just had the belt changed 3 weeks before it snapped.

Default If the car went out of warranty for miles at 50K...

you should definitely make a very polite request to AoA for help with the repair. It's not that far out of warranty and way short of the Audi-recommended timing belt replacement. They won't cover the whole thing, but perhaps will help out. Even if the car has been out of warranty for a while due to low miles per year, I'd still ask. After all, Audi says to leave the OEM belt in well past 60K! Good luck.
