I read in the audiusa.com page that the new 2001 A4 1.8T will have 170 HP instead of 150 HP. I wanted to know if this engine is a totally different engine than what is in the 2000 model. Or it just has a different programming in the ECU.

This was confirmed with a service tech just back from training on the new engine. This is part of the reason that the increase is bigger in hp than torque. VVT allows more top end power, which computes to more hp. This is also why chip tuners are getting more hp out of the 2001 engines.

I believe I read that it has 2 steps in the timing of the exhaust valves...not vvt, vvtLite!

ah, so that's what it's for. I had no clue, I thought maybe for the increase in boost
