a4 clutch and gas pedal performance - Grabby brakes also
gentlemen -
Don't get me wrong. I enjoy my 1999 A4 2.8 quattro 5-speed very much. However, I think it's odd that manipulating the clutch and gas (no brakes) to remain still on an incline is so much more difficult than my '84 Vanagon. And how about those brakes? Why so grabby? 50% of the time when I come to rest there's an annoying jolt of the car as it reaches 0 mph. Again, my Vanagon is so much smoother. Any remedies, fixes, thoughts, political statements?

All car are different...took me a while to get used to the brakes coming from an accord...
as with balancing on a hill using the gas and clutch, i don't think this is a good idea...I believe it wears your clutch.

They are a bit more grabby than I'm used to, coming from a Ford Ranger. But, you get used to the technique and stopping smoothly.
As for holding yourself on a hill with your clutch, that's ultra bad for your clutch life - just heel-toe or use the e-brake.

I agree - every time someone else drives my car I almost go through the windshield. They are firm up until the end where they get grabbier (is that a word?) than an old american luxoboat. I was almost wondering if something was wrong (2001 1.8T).
None of my previous VWs had such grabby brakes - honestly I think they might be the grabbiest I've owned. I still have to make a conscious effort to come to a complete stop.
Maybe it is the standard pads?
