Re: a4 handling vs. 328
Chris,
Your Audi dealer should have a reprint of a "Car" magazine article that concluded just the opposite. They're so close as to make it a useless comparison. Get the one that makes you smile when you look at it.
BTW, I drove both before I bought my A4. I also drove the 323, the M3 (for the fifth time) and the 528. Conclusions, were what you'd expect. The M3 is the best of the bunch, the 528 is second, the 328 and the A4 are so close except for the $3-4k price difference, and the 323 was a notch down, IMHO. I prefered the A4 for a variety of reasons, but I do think the BMW has better brakes (power, feel, etc.) The M brakes are out of this world, but even the 323 had killer binders. The A4's brakes are good, but not stellar.
Peter 98.5 2.8QM

C&D Comparison
Chris,
I too read the C&D comparison, and somehow I had an impression the article was part of the new 3 series publicity/promotion along with the 8-page BMW glossy ad in this issue.
So if you test drive a 328 yourself and don't totally agree with the article, I don't get surprised.
This is really just my opinion. No offense to C&D, BMWs, BMW oweners.
Nozomi

Go drive all of them...
C&D responds better in that issue to the Ford Contour than to BOTH of the superior euro cars. As a previous BMW owner(w/ bad experiences BTW), the A4 gets the nod. All are great driving cars... the M3 is my first choice but a little rough for daily driving(someday maybe I can afford both). The A4's interior won me over, not to mention the $4K lower price and the super abundance of 3's and BMW's in general here in the southeast.
Buy what suits you. Happy driving.
98.5 A4QMS2.8 Avant

Re: a4 handling vs. 328
I think that the A4 quattro-sport package actually handles better than the 328 sport suspension. However the 328 has a stronger feel to it (more muscle), while the A4 is more silky and smooth.
Gotta drive em for yourself though...
