i have a 2001 audi a4, 2.8l (quattro)
my car says take in for service in 4000 miles.
my question is... do i need to?
what if i dont'?
can i make it stop telling me to when it gets to that point (i'm sure it will be annoying)?
if i do, how much should i expect to pay?
what type of regular maintenance is done?
also, when i reach 60k, how much will a timing belt job be (avg?)?

if you put simple maintance stuff off, it can cause bigger problems in the long run. DO the service yourself. I did my first timing belt yesterday and it was easy. Cost me 200 for everything I need. Don't ever buy stuff from the dealer or take it there, cause I hate their mechanics anyways, they don't know s$@# anyways. The two times I've taken it there, I've ended up fixing the problem myself and paying 200 bucks. Here's a list of maintance stuff I did for 60K: Timing Belt, Front engine mount, All Control arms, tie rod ends, fuel filter, CV boots, wheel bearings, thermostat, water pump, belts, brake flush, oil and filter. None of these things were broken, but are prone to in the next 20k. Best advice with cars is replace it before it breaks. These parts cost me total 1000 dollars, and I put them in myself.

my question is... do i need to? You should
what if i dont'? depends what mileage is it about to hit, interval of service youre at
can i make it stop telling me to when it gets to that point (i'm sure it will be annoying)? Yes you can, do a search..it's a combination of those little setting diald on the dash and the key in the ignition
if i do, how much should i expect to pay?
what type of regular maintenance is done? Again depends on interval
also, when i reach 60k, how much will a timing belt job be (avg?)? Around about $800-$1000 (dont forget to do the water pump and tensioner)

thanks.
i just hope timing an '01 a4 is easier than an 89 80.... that was a trip!
just wasn't sure of the difficulty level, i know newer cars are weird with stuff sometimes
