A4 Questions >>>>>>>
I am looking to purchae a A4. I have several questions. 1. Is there any differences between the exterior/interior/engine/suspension of the 97-2000 models. 2. I am looking for a 97 1.8T Quattro and would like to eventually uprade it or a 98 V6 2.8 30 Valve Quattro. I know there are alot of upgrades for the 1.8T. I also like the V6 2.8 Quattro, but costs more, The V6 drives very smooth, I have not driven the 1.8T, how well does it drive ???? Is it better to purchase the V6 and put a supercharger on it or is the 1.8T better. I know that some of you may say for me to purchase a S4, but I don't have that kind of money and a good used one will be better, especially a used 97 1.8T quattro. I want to thank you for your answers and time.

I was once in your shoes. Wanted the 2.8, but could only afford the 1.8T.
That said, I have enjoyed the 1.8T enormously. It drives very smoothly, though perhaps not quite as smooth as the 2.8. I also have the sport suspensiion an love it.
If you can't afford the 2.8, the you probably can't afford a supercharger anytime in the near future. Whereas for less money that you could spend on a 2.8, you could have a modified 1.8T that will perform almost to a blown 2.8.
I think the 1.8T is certainly more bang for the buck.

I just purchased a 97 A4 1.8T.
It had 36,000 miles on it, now has 40,000.
I didnt test drive any 2.8 models, so I cant compare.
But my thoughts on the 1.8T:
the acceleration from a standstill point isnt that good...after 30mph it really picks up
Also, I think the 1.8T is very smooth on the highway, but I dont find that to be true in the city, with starting and stopping all the time.
My 1.8T seems to make engine noise also, especially in the city at low speeds, not on the highway.
I dont know if this is just my Audi or characteristic of most A4 1.8T's.

I was in the opposite situation as Tripp. I wanted a 1.8T but could afford the 2.8 (deal was better than 1.8T)I bought new. I drove both many times before. I like the stock power of the 2.8. The stock 1.8T seemed to lag behind a little on launch while the 2.8 puts the power on immediately. The 2.8 is smoother and a little quieter. the 1.8T can be modded more easily and can get over the 2.8 stock hp with chip and exhaust.
2.8 is more luxurious (wood trip, power seats etc.)
As far as model year changes, they changed through the years and half years. Look at the model year guide on this site for more info into specifics.
You make the final decision so get what you want and can afford.
hope this helps.

In addition to what has already been said below...
Keep in mind that if you want the OEM Sport Package, the '97 1.8T's "sport package" did NOT include any suspension upgrades. The package included: Sport steering wheel, sport seats, 16in 5 spoke wheels with all-season tires.
The sport package as it exists today with suspension upgrades was not available until MY98.
I have a '97 1.8TQMS and I LOVE IT!!!
