I believe that both are built on the same basic platform, and both have available the 1.8T 170hp powerplant. Other than that (and the obvious Audi bells & whistles), what are your impressions of driving both? (Feel, 'tightness', roadholding, ergonomics, amenities, whateva...)
thx!

as for ammenities... I don't know... I can only really compare my friend's new 2002 to my 97 A4...but his seems to have a bunch of little doohickies and stuff... nice little touches like how many miles to go till empty. But as far as driving goes I'd much rather drive my audi. My buddy's is front wheel drive... but I did get a chance to test drive a 4motion when he was looking... and it still didn't handle as well I feel as the A4.

That alone is reason to get the A4 IMHO. Also, if you're looking at new cars, they're not even built on the same chassis anymore. The Passat is the old B5 chassis, whereas the 2002 A4 is built on the B6 setup.

The audi feels a bit smaller, handles better with stock suspension, feels more precise (especially in the steering).
The passat is cheaper (base price), still a high quality vehicle, and would be my choice if you're not interested in quattro. It's a great car (I had the wagon, and it rocks).
But who's not interested in quattro???? The A4 is available with the 1.8T in quattro and manual trans. The passat only comes with 4mo (quattro) if you get the V6 and tiptronic, and these options push the price way up there.
FWIW- someone ran a red light and totalled my passat with me, wife, and unborn son in it. We walked away without a scratch, while the other people (subaru wagon) were really beat up. Both the passat and audi are among the safest cars out there.
