A41.8T - Chipping - Are sockets really bad?
Anyone have experiences with a socketed chip? This would allow you to swap between the performance chip and stock I imagine. I have read a post that socketed chips present reliabilty problems....is this true? I am thinking of having my 2000 socketed from the guys at PES. Please let me know. Thanks!

I haven't had any problems with mine. There were issues with bad sockets, but it shouldn't cause a problem. Most of the Users have sockets<p>'99.5 A4 1.8TQMS GIAC,

On the average sockets cause more problems...
because it gives you one more part to fail. They also don't like to be cycled (repeated swapping of chips), some are only rated for 5 insertions. But that is an average over many parts, most folks will not notice a difference.

The socket broke on my Garrett...
I didn't have a car for three weeks while it was being repaired. It also cost me about $400 for the labor/testing. Garrett would not reimburse me even though I'd only had it for a few weeks.

That's why we buy spare ECUs (long)
Anytime you add an aftermarket part to a car, you are taking responsibility for it. And you are taking a CHANCE that it will work perfectly.
I don't care if your chip is GIAC, APR, MTM, Neuspeed, Wett... Every tuner has had problems with some of their chips. Some manufacturers have had problems with their exhaust systems fitting properly (Borla and APR come to mind).
We've all ready horror stories about stainless steel brake lines.
These are all modifications to the car, and we as owners, need to understand that there is a certain degree of risk involved with any modification to the car.
Your best protection against that risk, concerning chipping anyway, is to buy a spare ECU.
I know that they are more expensive now than they were a few months ago. But it is still a good investment, and it will give you peace of mind.
I, too, had a Garrett socket go bad. But I had a spare ECU. I put the stock ECU into my car and continued to drive my car.
I had my socket replaced at AWE at no charge.
(Apparently, they had purchased a batch of contaminated sockets. Apparently they have all been weeded out.)
I would not EXPECT an Audi dealership to fix a modified part for free. Nor would I expect a tuner to reimburse me for expenses incurred at a dealership.
Garrett Lim is not in the business of selling insurance or roadside assistance. He sells chips.
Moreover he sells chips with his wonderful programming encoded on them.
If I have a problem with his product, I take it to one of his agents (AWE in my case) who will rectify the problem. Not an Audi dealership who will not warranty the repair.
Incidentally, this is also why I carry AAA as well as Roadside Assistance. If I ever have a problem with a modification, I don't want Audi to deny the towing claim because it was not a warranteed repair. Maybe I'm paranoid, but for $60/year, it's pretty cheap insurance.
I do not mean to sound harsh. Please don't be offended. But as a whole, we all need to take more responsibility when we modify our cars.
Not only for financial reasons -- but for the safety of ourselves, our passengers, and other drivers on the road.
Before you purchase ANY modification for your car, whether it's a chip, suspension, intake, or whatever, you should research (on this forum, in magazines, talk to technicians) and know the potential risks involved with any aftermarket modifications. And take the necessary precautions to reduce that risk.
Not only will you be safer and financially better off in the long run, but you'll enjoy your car more.
Safe travels,
Peter
