Ok... from what I understand about cars most newer 4 cyl. engines have 16 valves, 4 per cyl. Two of which are for exhaust and the other 2 for intake. The Audis though have 5 valves per cyl. does that mean the Audis have an extra exhaust valve, intake valve or niether?? Please enlighten me as to what this extra valve is for and why it is better

Along the same lines as having 4 valves, as opposed to 2 valves per cylinder, the extra intake valves ensures that the engine gets a healthy dose of air under hard acceleration. Whether it's a performance enhancement or not would probably require some serious flow testing and dyno testing. My guess is that's it serves a valid purpose, as other manufacturers are beginning to incorporate 5 valves as well.

..that combined with the "long stroke" design of Audi engines (both the 1.8T and the 2.8 are considered long stroke or undersquare engines) the extra valve enables a better compromise with good low end torque and decent top end power.
You can read the official press literature somewhere on the www.audi.com site under "5 valve technology".
