Default ABS and Parking Brake Questions

My A4 is the first car I have ever owned with ABS. Last night was my first drive on snow and ice and I noticed that when you slide with the brakes applied the pedal really pushes back at you. Is this normal for ABS. I was not expecting any jerkiness to come from the brakes. I was inclined to pump the brakes because I was practically doing that anyway just pushing back against the pedal but I know that you are not supposed to pump ABS. Not what I expected.
My other question regards the parking brake system. Is the whole brake line enclosed or is there a possibility of it freezing in place? Has anyone ever had this happen? When I got home after driving in the snow I decided to park it in first and not apply the parking brake for fear of the "frozen parking brake immobilizer."

Yes, that's normal for ABS. As for the parking brake, I'm not sure. I've never had it freeze, but I'm in NC. A couple of times I think the pads stuck to the disk, but released as soon as the car began to move. When I move back up north to MA, I'll probably park it in gear and not use the brake during the winter.

Parking brake is disc so don't worry. The force required to effect a nearly locked brake is easily overcome by hand pressure.

If your brake does lock up, just pull the lever for another click tighter and it will break free.

Note, no need to initially set the brake very tight. If you do, you might not have the room to pull up further.
