Default AC control/display unit acting up...

I'm a visitor from the TT forum, but we're having trouble with the AC in my wife's '96 A4Q so here it goes:

The control/display unit is acting really weird, often the light in the display will go out (yes, we've tried replacing the bulbs) - it's as if there's a loose connection. Also, the automatic temperature control is not working properly. When it is set at a certain temparature it will often make it way too cold by not blowing at all, or it will crank the heat all the way up although the temp. is set a conservative 70F or so. It seems the only way to operate it is to manually tweak it all the time - not very practical, and somewhat dangerous instead of keeping your eyes on the road.

So far all the dealer has been able to suggest is to completely replace the AC control/display unit and get a brand new one. They tried taking it apart twice, but all that did was to make it behave even weirder. Somewhat shelling out +1,000 bucks for a new unit doesn't seem right. Since we bought it used in '99 we've had problems with it fogging up really easy, so I'm hesitant to spend that much money and it would still not work and still be fogging.

Does anybody have any alternative suggestions for repairs instead of spending that much money, maybe someone has had a similar problem? Your help would be appreciated.

Default readmore...

if the display is acting weird could be two things:
one of them needs replacement or the screen was replaced before, and not installed properly into the board ??
with automatic control temp, could be the sensor, or the cicruit board is defective...
