Default Accelerating tips/Slipping clutch?

I'm trying to work on getting fast jumps and as smooth accelleration between the first few gears as I can. Where do you guys shift (rpm) in which gears? Any general tips on taking off? (2000 1.8tq)

Also, I find that if i punch the gas between 1st and second gear and get into 2and at about 5k-rpm the clutch seems to be slipping.. I get really weak acceleration and the engine continues to rev higher and higher. Is that a bad clutch or a 'feature'? If it's the clutch is it covered by warranty?

Thanks

Default If you're engaging second gear after a 1-2 shift with the engine running at 5K...

Then yes you're smoking the clutch. Don't do that... doesn't get you any speed and does lots of expensive to fix damage. The goal when shifting is to match the engine revs for the new gear to what they will be turning at when you fully engage the gear. So say at 30 mph in second you're at 3500 RPM and in third at 30 mph you'd be at 2500 RPM... when you shift from second to third you want the engine to be running at 2500 RPM to make as smooth a shift as possible (and also not waste any energy making you accelerate faster as well).

Yes the clutch is covered under warranty but they might not be too pleased with the massive abuse that you seem to be describing.

Default im one of the biggest no use fans!

im a huge no use fan! infact, i was going to put thier logo in my sig, but that is in the works. anyways, i went to see them twice in the past month, when they were here in LA. great shows! i love thier album live in a dive. ive never seen you post before, tell me a bit about yourself...?

about your shifting...try to keep it in the good 3-4 range. do you have a short shifter? that may help you shift faster. the clutch is a shady area w/aoa.

heh cool. I've been using this handle for like 5 years? maybe more.. I'm from santa clara which right next to sunnyvale which is where they're from... Just picked up my audi 3 weeks ago or so.. I'm diggin it, but it doesn't seem to be pulling as hard as it did..

Also the passenger side headlight cleaner was missing after lunch today but it's all good.. warranty covers it

what's 'w/aoa'?

Default great to see another no use fan here!

thats awsome! ive never been that far up north, but my freind is going to college there next year, so i may go visit him. does the band still reside is sunnyvayle? is that close to santa clarita?

your audi is 3 weeks old? or it got fixed? sorry i didnt understand.

about the clutch, the Audi of America Company (AOA) doesnt like to cover things like that, people will tell you it is coverd, others will say it isnt. i got my clutch repaired recently, i got my car used however. i heard a noise when i shifted, which turned out to be the throw out bearing, a part of the clutch.

Default oh cool

well i hope you are enjoying the audi. if your looking for some more pick up, have you considered a chip? either APR or GIAC

Yeah i've considered chipping it. Most likely APR if i do. I'll wait until the warranty expires before I do, unless i can get my dealer's ok to do it. I'll talk to them next monday when i get my headlight cleaner fixed.

my plan is eventually do apr stage III (plus intercooler) i think.. We'll see if the chip quenches my thirst for speed

But if it's pulling less hard now (i think i've only done that clutch smoking thing like 3 times) then it may well be a clutch problem. Perhaps i'll let the guy at audi drive it and tell me if it seems sluggish.
