I have the 17s, and I've only bent one (on a HORRIFIC road ridge in a construction zone), but to go with 18s in Michigan I'd recommend a quality forged (or at least semi-forged) rim, like Volk, Racing Hart, Fikse, SSR, or BBS.

I used to live in pontiac and bloomfield hills and I am up there with family in sterling heights every once in a while... and I would gringe on some of those detroit roads...

i have the 17"s and they weigh in around 22lbs. not too bad. they are STRONG. i worked in san fran for a few years and now i'm in houston. neither are known for smooth streets.
i've gone over holes inches deep positive that i cracked/bent a rim. nope.
oh .. have had them on for about 2years now.
hope that helped.
