Glad you got it going!
Just an update for you guys. 4Driver4 was correct in saying that autozone sucks when it comes to starters and alternators. i have to replace an f'd up alternator now because the voltage regulator in the one i have now is giving off 15Volts to the battery therefore causing my lights to flicker on and off. I watched the voltage gauge go from 15V and drop to 8V... such bull****. Thanks for the advice 4Driver. I don't think i'll ever go back to autozone for an alternator/start again....

Speaking from personal experience, I have found it much better to take the alternator and starter from the vehicle to a local automotive electrical specialist to have them repaired. Not only do most reputable specialists use the correct parts, they check each part for wear and replace anything worn including the armature commutator, which has a tendency to develop a deep groove on the B5 alternators.

One other benefit of this approach is knowing the alternator/starter will fit correctly when it is reinstalled!

Does anyone have any recommendations for where to buy a good used starter? I was considering buying a used one because a new one from the dealer is around 300 and from ecs tuning they come for about 250 after I return the core and including shipping.

I would highly prefer oem because the dealer told me that places like autozone sell crap starters but I don't know. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where they got a good starter for a decent price?

The part number I am looking for is 0001108174 and the manufacturer is Bosch. I am looking for this exact part number cause I was told by the dealer that there could be issues if I put a different part number in it. My car is a 1998 Audi A4 2.8 Automatic 30v

Some early model AHA engines did use a different starter. But the only issue is whether or not it fits in the hole. If it bolts in, it's correct.

I'll take a look. I know I have a starter out of a 98, but not the super early model (a rarity).

Where are you located?

Whatever you do, don't buy a cheap Chinese starter on ebay.

The number you provided is for the later, more common starter. I have one. Please email if you want and I can send it out priority mail today.
