Default Air Filter replacement question for a 2003 A4 1.8tQ

I was wondering if someone could help me out. I have a new 2003 A4 1.8TQ and I am trying to replace the air filter with a green performance filter but I'm having trouble trying to open the air box. I saw the article in the tech section and tried to follow it but it seems to leave some steps out. I can get the air intake duct off and I removed the two screws on the top and I can only open it about a 1/2 inch. There seemds to be some vacuum line and other wires preventing me from opening the air box but I'm not sure how and if I can remove them. Also, do I have to remove the heat shield ? Sorry, for such a basic question but it's my first Audi and it's all new to me. Any opinions on a turbo blanket?

Thanks in advance. Great Forum.
