Default Air Intakes

Okay, so I was recently told that my AEM Cold Air Intake does absolutely nothing to benifit my car. That a stock air cleaner is actually better then the AEM. I am not sure I believe this. How and why would all the intake manufacturers post "factual" results?

Default But - if properly shielded - isn't a CAI better? Much more....

So many variables to take into account - but isn't a cold air intake better if properly shielded (to make sure you're taking in COLD and not HOT air?

The orgonal question is intriguing - if ALL these manufacturers are claiming that their intakes and filters improve performance - are they ALL wrong and we ALL right?

So many people just dismiss these intake kits without explaining. Like you. The filter companies all provide these great "results". Their arguement is a little more compelling. They explain themselves. I think this is where the confusion from the original poster (and myself) comes in.

I've search this forum over and over and can't find a definitive answer. Anyone care to try and give a detailed and reasoned answer - one way or the other?

Default take out your air filter on a hot day

and guess what, it's hot. I think the factory airbox is great, does a great job with quieting the turbo sound. An intake in most cases isn't going to gain or lose you much. I can say this, my APR airbox with my current turbo setup did gain me some g/s in MAF readings. Is it the filters? The airbox design? I have no idea, but my logs don't lie. I'm not so sure there is much to gain on the smaller turbos with MAF housings and software that are getting maxed out anyways.

Default Rookie question: does an intake help more/less/same on a non-turbo?

I have a non-turbo 1.8. It's a Euro thing I guess.

Will a CAI help more, less or the same on a non-turbo engine? (Again - assuming proper shilding, etc).

Default the only way to really know is to measure airflow with both setups

in some cars, the stock airbox and filter flow better than others. Actually, I can't say I did my comparison to a stock setup. I was actually comparing my home made cone setup to my APR airbox. I haven't had a stock box in quite some time now.

Default The factory airbox is sealed, the only incoming air is from outside.

So it is better for performance than a HAI.

Never, *NEVER* belive a manufacturers claims or even worse is claims from magazines.

Magazines regularly skew results so the biggest advertiser gets the best results.

Default The oem airbox is NOT restrictive. If it was, maybe the CAI guys would have a leg to stand on....

As for the aftermarket filter/K&N people, you should read this and then decide how badly you want that extra 1hp.

K&N Dirt Inhaler (Tm)

Default As soon as I get my PHD I'll be able to understand it. :)

I've read it before. Genal idea seems to be that K&N filters allow more in in - but also more dirt. Correct?

Default Nice, makes sense...

I'd never put a K&N on my car again, when I did it killed my MAF before...
