Airbag light on

1996 A4 and the airbag light has been on for several years! Been a minor irritation until now, however the state inspection rules have changed and I can't get it passed until I fix it (one way or another). I've searched and found various references to a possible loose connection under either the drivers or passengers seat. I was going to disconnect all obvious connectors and clean and reconnect them, however Bentleys warns to connect VAG 5095 airbag adaptor when disconnecting the connector! Is this really required? What would happen if I didn't connect this adaptor? Has anyone any experience with this?

Unfortunately I only have a regular scanner, not a vagcom so no codes are available. I know I have to eventually track down someone with a vagcom to get the light cancelled, but wanted to try to fix the problem first!
