I need a 4 wheel alignment on my 1997 A41.8TQA. Should I take it to an Audi dealer or can any reputable mechanic do an alignment properly (any special Audi machine/tools needed).
Any help would be great.

...the shop I took my A4 to for an alignment is very familiar with aligning Audi's/Porsche's/etc. and they use an older Snap-On type "rack" and they do a wonderful job. I wouldn't recommend letting a chain such as NTB or Sears do the alignment unless you're certain that they know what they're doing, and preferably have aligned Audi's in the past.

ask if they do a Audi AWD alignment. Some racks need special extensions to handle the Audi AWD system, others do not. I'd prefer taking it to a tire shop or independent mechanic before the dealer because of the rates:
Independent: $32.00
Tire Shop: $80.00
Dealer: $120.00
Independent: $32.00
Tire Shop: $80.00
Dealer: $120.00

Sears ranks right up there with NTB in my book (I know...Sears owns NTB). Anyone have a link for the Hunter alignment website.
Many independent shops don't have the $$ to buy a full Hunter alignment rack...this is why you will spend more at a place that does...they have to recoup the money.
Alternatively, you can try to find a small local shop that uses "old-fashioned" technology to do the work. It requires a little precision, but if the tech is good, he should be able to do a nice job. If you trust them, go for it, otherwise, stick with a place that has the "dummy-proof" Hunter alignment racks.

Unfortunately, it doesn't have a "finder" for shops with a Hunter rack. They only offer a find for shops that have their wheel balancing machine.

http://www.hunter.com/index.cfm</a
