Almost random drop in RPM at idle (to 300RPM)

Randomly when stopped at a stop sign or stop light, the RPM in my A4 will drop to about 300RPM. I can't imagine this is normal. The car has died a few times when I started to let up on the clutch at the same time a drop was occuring. Other than that, it makes idle rough briefly, but it recovers and idle goes to 1000RPM then settles back to 750RPM.
This happens with or without A/C being on; the check engine light never comes on either.
Ideas?

Chris Murphy
Pearl 98 A4 2.8QM

Don't know much about it, but at one of my services the dealer said they replaced the IAC valve because the idle was rough. I've seen others mention this too, so you might search the archives.
Kyle
'97 2.8
