They cost about the same.
I know th at the CO's will make MUCH more of a difference in handling, but the car already handles very well with the sport package and sway bars, and I'm itching to replace the stock 16's.

I'd say the coilovers are the best bang for the buck. You'll immediately notice a handling improvement. The stock tires will hold up very well, but you'll yearn for more grip the first day you're out with the coilovers.
IMHO, upgrading to 17's with the stock sport suspension is not worth it ($2K). At that point the rims are more about looks than performance. You'll appreciate this upgrade more when you hit a corner in your coilovers, and your car is flat, but your tires just won't hold.
