Default alternatives to z rated tires

I'm looking to get a second set of tires for fall/winter use in Seattle, with occasional trips into the mountains in the snow. I have an '01QMS, and the SP8000 E tires caused my heart to leap in our wet heavy snow on Friday.

Can someone rec. a great all-season that will perform well in the snow, too? or at least point me to an informative thread on this issue?

Thanks,
Clithero

Default stay away from Dunlop D60 A2's...

that's what I have and there lousy in the snow. I've heard that SP5000's are better.

Default Pirelli P7000 SS seems to be a happy choice...

Check Tirerack for reviews and comments.

Default Michelin Pilot XGT-Z4....

I was like you wondering if this Z rated tire would be able to do what others told me it could do in cold weather......YES it can!

I live in NE PA and go up and down 3 mountains on my 20 miles trip to work every day and I would say my weather is worse than yours. The temps have been around 20 degrees all winter, with wet snow, 12 inch snow falls, sleet, rain, etc. The XGT's worked flawlessly in everything thrown at them. The rubber stays pliable at low temperatures compared to other manyfacturers Z rated tires. Snow traction was very, very good even in the 12 inch stuff I got carried away crusing too fast and had to back off. They passed the Beamers going slow up the mountains. These also removed the wandering at my A4 exhibited.

These tries are fairly expensive though...about $160 each! They ride about 15% harsher than the original Badyear Eagle RS-A's, but this settles down in about 2K miles of use.

Default I've got P7000SS...

If I had to do it again, I'd trade some miles for a stickier compound.

Default Bridgestone RE940

Put them on a mid-engine RWD car... drive on packed ice and snow and they perform just fine. However, they are noisier than SP5000 for sure.

Will try SP5000's snow performance with the A4 when I go to ski this weekend.

Default Agreed. No D60 A2s...

turned out to be the worst thing I ever did to my Miata. Those things handled worse than the stock Bridgestones that it came with.

They were terrible in snow... Even with Quattro!
